Intern Structural Engineer – Performance Assessment of Girder-to-Plate Connections

About the role

Join SBM Offshore’s engineering team in Monaco for a 6‑month internship focused on evaluating the structural performance of girder‑to‑plate connections used in floating offshore units and welded steel structures.

Key responsibilities

• Assess the influence of geometry, welding configuration, alignment, and local reinforcement on load transfer, stress concentration, fatigue resistance, and fabrication defect tolerance.
• Compare different connection arrangements under static and cyclic loading, including the effect of initial weld defects and cracks.
• Evaluate connection details using static strength, fatigue life, crack initiation, propagation, and fracture mechanics criteria.
• Develop and apply advanced finite element models to support analyses.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Engineering or a related discipline.
• Interest in structural mechanics, welded steel structures, and offshore engineering.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and English communication skills.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of finite element modelling.
• Familiarity with advanced FEM tools (e.g., FEMAP, Nastran) and relevant codes & standards is a plus.
