Stream Processing Engineer – Apache Flink Internals (Remote)

About the role

We are looking for a senior engineer to work on the core of Apache Flink, the open‑source stream‑processing engine. The position is fully remote and focuses on improving Flink’s runtime, scheduler, state backend, checkpointing and SQL/Table API at petabyte scale.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute production‑grade code to the Apache Flink project.
• Debug, profile and optimise Flink internals such as runtime, scheduler, state backend, checkpointing and back‑pressure handling.
• Improve performance and scalability of stateful stream processing in large‑scale production environments.
• Tune JVM behaviour (GC, memory layout, concurrency) at the engine level.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams and open‑source committers on integrations and ecosystem work.
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the engineering bar through code reviews and design critiques.

Required profile

• 6+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong Java programming skills.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems and concurrent/parallel programming.
• Working knowledge of stream‑processing concepts: stateful processing, event‑time semantics, checkpointing and back‑pressure handling.
• Familiarity with JVM performance characteristics (GC, memory, threading).
• Advanced level of English.
