Query Engine Engineer – Apache Trino Internals (Remote)

About the role

We are looking for a senior Query Engine Engineer to work on the core of Apache Trino. The position is fully remote and focuses on the planner, optimizer, distributed execution framework and connector architecture at petabyte scale.

Key responsibilities

• Write and contribute production‑grade code to the Trino open‑source project, especially in the planner, execution engine or connectors.
• Debug, profile and optimise query planning, cost‑based optimisation, distributed execution, memory management and fault‑tolerant execution.
• Improve performance and scalability of distributed SQL workloads in large‑scale production environments.
• Analyse and tune JVM behaviour (GC, memory layout, concurrency) at the engine level.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams and external open‑source committers.
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the engineering bar through code reviews and design critiques.

Required profile

• 6+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Java.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems and concurrent/parallel programming.
• Working knowledge of SQL engine internals (query planning, optimisation, distributed execution, memory management).
• Deep database‑internals foundation, not just query writing.
• Familiarity with JVM performance characteristics (GC, memory, threading).
• Advanced English communication skills.
