Distributed Storage Engineer (Apache Ozone Internals) – Remote

About the role

We are looking for a Distributed Storage Engineer with deep knowledge of Apache Ozone internals to work on the core storage engine. The position is fully remote and focuses on building, debugging, and scaling the Object Manager, Storage Container Manager, DataNodes, and related metadata components at petabyte scale.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute production‑grade code to the Apache Ozone project and upstream the changes.
• Debug and optimise Ozone internals such as replication, consistency, and metadata management.
• Resolve complex distributed issues including replication failures, networking bottlenecks, disk I/O, and concurrency problems.
• Improve performance and scalability of storage operations across petabyte‑scale deployments.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams and open‑source committers on integrations and ecosystem work.
• Mentor senior engineers, conduct code reviews, and raise the overall engineering quality.

Required profile

• 6+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong Java programming skills.
• Solid background in distributed systems and concurrent or parallel programming.
• Hands‑on experience with at least one distributed storage system (e.g., Ozone, HDFS, Ceph, MinIO) beyond consumer‑level usage.
• Working knowledge of replication, consistency, fault tolerance, and metadata management concepts.
• Familiarity with JVM performance characteristics such as garbage collection, memory management, and threading.
• Advanced proficiency in English.
