Query Engine Engineer – Apache Trino Internals (Remote)

About the role

We are looking for a senior Query Engine Engineer to work on the core of Apache Trino. The focus is on the planner, optimizer, distributed execution framework, and connector architecture at petabyte and enterprise scale. This is a remote position with the opportunity to contribute to an open‑source project used worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Write production‑grade code for Trino, especially in the planner, execution engine, or connectors.
• Debug, profile, and optimize Trino internals such as query planning, cost‑based optimization, distributed execution, memory management, and fault‑tolerant execution.
• Improve performance and scalability of distributed SQL workloads in production environments.
• Tune JVM behavior (GC, memory layout, concurrency) at the engine level.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams and open‑source committers on integrations and ecosystem work.
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the engineering bar through code reviews and design critiques.

Required profile

• 6+ years of software development experience.
• Strong Java programming skills.
• Experience with distributed systems and concurrent/parallel programming.
• Working knowledge of SQL engine internals (query planning, optimization, distributed execution, memory management).
• Solid understanding of database internals at the execution layer.
• Familiarity with JVM performance characteristics (GC, memory, threading).
• Advanced level of English.
