Hydrodynamics Engineer Internship (VIV on Mooring Lines)

About the role

This internship focuses on vortex‑induced vibrations (VIV) on mooring lines for offshore floating production units. You will develop a practical, technically justified approach for assessing VIV, from standards review to numerical modelling and fatigue evaluation.

Key responsibilities

• Review and summarise VIV requirements from ABS, BV and DNV.
• Develop physical understanding of VIV, establish dimensionless parameters and screening indicators.
• Assess VIV on a representative spread‑moored project, comparing modelling options and investigating key parameters.
• Post‑process responses, derive stress or tension ranges, perform cycle counting and evaluate incremental fatigue.
• Document modelling assumptions, limitations and quality checks.
• If time permits, assess VIV on a turret‑moored project and develop a decision framework for VIV methodology selection.

Required profile

• Second or third‑year engineering student.
• Prior exposure to offshore engineering or mooring systems is an advantage.
• Programming in Python is required.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Use of OrcaFlex software.
• Use of Shear 7 software.
